Quake Amiga Accelerator Future Impressions

For me, I can play 3D FPS games in 8FPS and think that is good. But as with everything, Amiga needs to move forward. But when I sit down and play Quake in 16FPS on my Amiga 1200 with 68060 100MHz, it is really playable. The game runs in 320×240, and I am able to shoot enemies, jump and carry on.

Beside my Amiga 1200, I have my Amiga 2000 sitting side by side with a 68040 1.4GHz CPU that pulls 320×240 to over 66FPS!!! I play the very same Quake game there and it does move a bit better yes, but overall I don’t feel the huge difference.

So, is a Warp a worse purchase than a PiStorm? No, its not. Because all comes to what you want to do.

Timedemo Impressions

I have never been a fan of FPS checks in games as I am not able to feel the huge differences. Yes, even I play GTA5 play at 60FPS or 30FPS, I cant feel the difference. But when testing both of the machines, I am able to see the huge difference when running the timedemo demo1 on my Amigas.

It is clear for me that my 68040 1.4GHz PiStorm Amiga 2000 wins a lot. But once I start to play Quake myself, I dont feel the difference.

I am in fact happy to get over 16FPS with 68060 100MHz. It shows how the Amiga community been working to optimise the game for 68k as the very first demo that I was introduced to at CU Amiga office in London got 8FPS in the smallest window! The timedemo shows in the video above shows that if more 68060’s were overclocked to 100MHz at the launch of 68060’s, the Amiga would have got more respect in the PC world.

PiStorm is the future with Warp protecting it

PiStorm is the cheapest option. But the Warp accelerators is a perfect accelerator purchase that is protecting the Amiga.

Quake 1 in 320×240 on Amiga 1200 68060 100MHz

The Warp uses a 68060, which is the strongest 68k CPU ever made by Motorola. With its FPGA you can overclock as far as your 68060 can go. Mine goes to 100MHz. With Warp you also have full WiFi and USB mempen support. Lots of USB mouse works with it too. You can also switch between various of Kickstarts.

So, if you want to have the best complete package for Amiga then the Warp accelerators are a good choice!

Backward compatibility and the Future

With a good backward compatibility and at the same time be able to have crystal clear HDMI image out for both PAL and RTG games. Then I would save up some and invest in a Warp accelerator. Warp is a good purchase.

The difference is FPS… but for me, its great to see how fast Quake is on 68060. Playable for sure!

PiStorm on the other hand is much cheaper and faster. But for now it lacks USB mempen support and it lacks WarpVision. But this will change in the future. In longer term, PiStorm and the use of other CPU’s as a base for emulating 68k is Amigas future with no doubt! What Michal and his team is doing. Is to preserve Amiga for the future. Maybe there will be a Warp accelerator in similar way later?

Protecting and Preserving

The PiStorm upgrade is perfect for rescue old Amigas such as Amiga 1000 and Amiga 2000 from instinction. Before it was the Vampire that did that, but PiStorm is cheaper and have a totally different goal. Even the Amiga 600 and PiStorm16 blew my mind. Lots of great options!

So, either 16FPS or 63FPS. Quake is playable on both systems! Amiga Makes It Possible.
