Heretic II for powered 68k Amigas

For high-end 68k Amigas. Heretic II is ported to 68k! It should work nicely on the new A600GS!

Heretic II is the highly acclaimed conceptual sequel to the Hexen and Heretic series by Raven Software. The game was released by Hyperion for AmigaOS 4. But now with Classic Amigas getting extra power, Heretic II is finally available for high-end 68k systems.

Heretic II relies on a modified version of the Quake II engine by id Software and plays from a behind-the-back third-person perspective as in the Tomb Raider series but still controls a lot like a first-person shooter. Heretic II was developed by Steffen Häuser, and made specifically for high-performance 68K Amiga systems. 68060 100MHz or above is recommended here!

Features for 68k Heretic II release by Hyperion

  • Quake II 3D Engine from ID Software
  • Software renderer and MiniGL renderer (MiniGL renderer can only be used when 3D hardware drivers are available for PiStorm). The software renderer runs 25 fps on 640×480 on Pi CM4, 21 fps on Pi 4, 19 fps lowres on Pi 3. For Pi 3 there are also 480×270 and 640×360 resolutions
  • Atmospheric game music via Ogg Vorbis replay
  • Localization (both text and audio output) in English, German, French, Italian and Spanish
  • Improved quality of the video intro/extro
  • Multiplayer support (internet or LAN for up to 32 players)
  • Impressive enemy AI
  • Excellent player control (mouse, keyboard, joystick), optional PSXPort support
  • Expandable with new mission packs such as Quake

Quake II itself runs very well on PiStorm Amiga with Pi3. So, with more optimization code Heretic II can run even better as it is using the Quake II 3D Engine. With some further tweaks, it should even get more FPS for Warp and Vampire users too.

Technical requirements for running Heretic II

  • AmigaOS 3.x
  • PiStorm (Pi 3, Pi 4, or Pi CM4) or via emulation such as UAE
  • 64 MB RAM minimum, more recommended
  • Picasso96 with chunky 16-bit modes (no AGA)
  • AHI 4.18
  • mpega.library (game installer can install it)
  • 400 MB free hard disc space

This new version of Heretic II is available as of the 9th of August via Amiga dealers. Once I have my hands on it, a review will be posted. Interesting times for PiStorm Amiga users! This is how Amiga games should be done. Available for everyone. Not like Apollo Team releasing games only working on Vampire-equipped Amigas.
