There are a few PCMCIA CD ROMs that doesn’t require external power. Sony Vaio ATAPI CD ROMs for PCMCIA are one of the few that don’t require that, and because of that, they are very compatible with both Amiga 600 and Amiga 1200.

PCMCIACD.devie is a device driver made by Aidan Holmes that comes with this package for use with the Sony PCGA-CD51 PCMCIA CD-ROM with your Amiga. These drives do not require any additional power to operate and plug directly into the PCMCIA port. Which is indeed a great purchase for Amiga 600 and Amiga 1200 owners.

Reported working drives with this PCMCIA driver

  • Sony PCGA-CD51
  • Sony CRX75A (16bit switch enabled)
  • Sony PCGA-DVD51 (reported by user, not personally tested)

This driver has been developed primarily for the Amiga 1200 and works with AllegroCDFS, CDFileSystem, CacheCDFS, AmiCDFS, and AsimCDFS. It should also work without issues on any Amiga 600 with the same CDFS systems installed.

See Aminet: disk/cdrom/amicdfs240.lha for a nice CDFS system.
