Lara is back! Both in a improved Tomb Raider version and in the Very first Tomb Raider 2 demo! Her second adventure is a marvelous engineering using the OpenLara engine too… For more info, read on!…
A new full version of OpenLara for Amiga is now on Aminet, which including a remarkable playable demo of Tomb Raider 2 using the same engine. Now that’s huge!…
OpenLara is the open-source re-implementation of the classic Tomb Raider engine by XProger, ported to 68k Amiga by BSzili and continued by the community. What started as a proof-of-concept with no sound a couple of years ago is now a full game. I have been playing the previous version with my Amiga CD32 controller and I love it!
OpenLara release Highlights
The release of OpenLara is no longer a tech demo. The Amiga port is now described as full gameplay. All of the items, all NPCs, and all levels are now accessible. The game comes with FMV sequences, subtitles, language selection, and bug-fixes after nearly a year of work.
The developer thanks Torti-the-Smurf for testing the fixed-point Linux-to-68k conversion and BSzili for the original port.
Tomb Raider for Amiga Now includes
- Stereo Paula audio, 22 kHz with panning — no AHI needed, but AHI support is also improved
- RTG modes 320×200 and 640×400 plus AGA with optimized 64/32/16 color modes using 4/5/6 bitplanes for better frame rate
- Color quantizers for low-color modes to keep image quality
- FMV with subtitles — generated via translate for now, but works in-game
- In-game audio and graphics configuration
- Improved AI (much tougher enemies), camera movement and vertex lighting
- FPU-less builds: 020, 030, 040 and 060 versions for AmigaOS 3.2 — no FPU needed, runs on 4MB Fast
Versions before had missing triggers that blocked NPCs and bugs grabbing high ledges — fixed in 1.0.3b to 1.0.6b.
Latest OpenLara version adds newest bosses and items. Bringing Lara Croft to the Amiga seemed like a fairy tale years ago,.. but now its here. The game reaches 30FPS easily on my Amiga 1200 68060 100MHz. I can finally claim that Amiga is the new Playstation 1 platform with OpenLara running so good.
But wait! That’s not all! Tomb Raider 2 demo Released!
Included in same archive is Tomb Raider 2 demo using OpenLara engine. As AmigaTronics reports, it’s early, still months of development ahead before fully playable, but it runs. I can confirm this! This is the first time we see Lara’s second outing on classic Amiga hardware.
If Tomb Raider 1 complete shows Amiga can handle PlayStation 1 3D when coded well, Tomb Raider 2 demo shows where it’s going next with large outdoor areas like Great Wall, Venice, and more complex geometry.
Download: Aminet — game/shoot/openlara.lha — includes full Tomb Raider 1 and TR2 demo. You need original game data files.
Amiga seems to be more alive now and that’s a huge thanks to the amazing Amiga community. OpenLara just shows how much Amiga love there is.
