CPU Upgrade Differences on Amiga

What sort of benefits do you get by upgrading your Amiga? Almost every Amiga computer can be upgraded from 68000, 68020, 68030 or 68040 to 68060 or even 68080. But what does that mean? What can you do on an Amiga with 68000 versus one with 68060 or 68080? Thats pretty much and so in this Amiga Feature we reveal the differences.

We have chosen to not mention PowerPC CPUs in this article as we want to focus on AmigaOS 3.x usage. The PowerPC solutions for Classic Amiga is to run PowerUP or WarpUP. We want to reveal the 68k power for you.

The Differences between 68000 and 68060

is huge! You can do a lot more with more

CPU power!

Amiga Meets all Different Needs!

Amiga CPU Upgrade in a Funny way

When you buy the most basic Amiga 500 or Amiga 1200. You get a fast machine from the start because of the operating system created by Commodore. AmigaOS is one of worlds fastest operating systems even in 2019. But the differences in AmigaOS usage itself is not that big when upgrading.

However, when you upgrade your Amiga just a bit you will notice that heavier apps such as music players, word processors or even browsing basic HTML sites is a difference. Also the GUI of AmigaOS can be upgraded pretty much.

The Amiga CPU differences are bigger than you think. You feel this on apps as mentioned above. But also in games such as Elite II and Zeewolf 2 which uses 3D vector graphics. The gameplay is simply more fun. A jump from 68000 to 68030 is bigger than you think. Out of sudden your Amiga is capable

of achieving things faster or even be able to play heavier games that even uses 3D textures such as Gloom Deluxe or Xtreme Racing. Doom even runs fine with a smaller window.

Then when you eventually jumps ups to 68060 or 68080 then Your Amiga is capable of playing MP3 files. With 68080 you can even watch MPEG movies without external hardware help. Also emulating other systems such as MacOS is at this level something unique on the Amiga.

But not everyone needs this power. With such power a few Amiga games will run too fast. So many Amiga users got several machines with different specs because of that.

But those games that can detect CPU and adjust itself to it like Coco Banan by Amiten Software which is a AMOS made game is brilliant.

With any of the upgrades for Classic Amiga you will never get the speed for watching MP4 clips or be able to watch YouTube clips. But when chosing a Vampire 68080 accelerator you are getting closer and closer. Maybe one day Classic Amiga can do much more.

Amiga is surviving Because of 3rd party hardware Companies

Getting a faster Amiga is not the same if compared with getting a new PC that is many GHz times faster. But with a better accelerator you can do much more. It helps you browse the web, render 3D images faster or even play Amiga 3D games faster. Especially for those titles that were released for the Amiga platform after the demise of Commodore in 1994.

Because of 3rd party hardware makers that can sell their products thru stores like Amedia Computer France and Retro Ready. Classic Amiga is still surviving. You can buy any type of accelerator with different speed. Not only 68k CPUs is available but even PowerPC CPUs is available.

Without the 3rd party supporters then the Amiga market wouldn’t be the same today. They are one of the reasons why Amiga is still surviving today. So do support them, either its a 68030, 68060 or 68080 FPGA upgrade. Some of these manufactures are Arch Tech and Apollo Team.

We at Amitopia Amiga Magazine recommends you to check out any Amiga retailer or store. They will help you on your quest for upgrading your Amiga. Choose the accelerator that fits your Amiga usage. Be wise,.. choose what you need.

The HC508CR accelerator for Amiga 500 uses 68HC000 which is a modified 68000 CPU that can be clocked much higher. You can read about it here as we wrote about it ther. Also it seems to be available for purchase at Amedia Computer France here. It even got a Compact Flash memcard reader on it. Very interesting!..

Including all fo the new CPU upgrades you also got mem upgrade for Amiga 600 such as the card above here from Arch Tech in Poland which is one of many that improves the lifespan for many Classic Amiga computers. Retro Ready sells it with 9.5MB RAM. Its quite popular so its sold out at the moment but its soon available again.

Amiga people got choices which many other computer communities can dream of. Amiga is a true survivor because of the community.

The 68080 FPGA accelerators from Apollo Team is today the fastest available accelerators and for the price you pay. You get a lot.
