Prepare Amiga HD with MorphOS guide

Welcome to Amitopia Guide Articles. Here we bring you the Distrita guide on howto make a Amiga 1200 HD out of a Compact Flash card with MorphOS. To get MorphOS running, you need to get a PowerPC Mac*, Pegasos or Efika. Enjoy

Here is a list of PowerPC Macs that MorphOS works with
– eMac G4
– MacMini G4
– PowerMac G4
– PowerMac G5
– PowerBook G4
– iBook G4

Here is a list of PowerPC Motherboards that MorphOS works with
– Efika
– Pegasos
– Pegasos II
– SAM460
– AmigaOne X5000 (*when MorphOS 3.10 is out!)

Important notes!:

* – Only 1.25 Ghz and 1.42 Ghz eMac models are supported.
* * *  – Only PowerMac 7,2 and PowerMac7,3 (A1047) are supported. Also, MorphOS will use a maximum of 1GB of memory even if more is installed in the machine.
* * * * – Only models with a Radeon graphics chip are supported! NVIDIA GeForce2 MX and NVIDIA GeForce4 MX/Titanium cards found in some PowerMac3,x models are not supported. Also, audio is currently only supported for PowerMac3,4 to 3,6 models.

Please check www.morphos-team.net site for more info! Look for ATI Radeon cards support especially!

For this guide you should have prepared!

  • IDE->Compact Flash (CF) adapter. You can get it cheap on Ebay!
  • Compact Flash card! This guide have been tested with 4GB CF card!
  • Compact Flast (CF) USB reader for a MorphOS compatible computer.
  • MorphOS compatible hardware.
  • Amiga machine with Kickstart 3.1. This guide is tested on Amiga 1200!

Prepare Amiga HD with MorphOS guide Step By Step guide to Follow

1. Change partition layout type to RDB

Grab1

2. Click “Edit Filesystems…”
Grab2

3. Click “Add…”. Select 68k filesystem you have copied somewhere on HD, it doesn’t need to be in L: either. Filesystem will be written to destination disk’s RDB block, it won’t be needed to reside in any directory after it.
Grab3

4. Edit filesystem properties on the window which did open after you selected the filesystem file. Most important is to change filesystem to “Custom” and edit its identifier to something which isn’t used on native filesystems. In this example I’m adding 68k SFS and change the identifier to SFS/05 which is in hex 0x53465305. 05 is just big enough which won’t mess with usual 00 or OS4’s 02 etc.
Grab4

5. Save changes and create a new partition. Change partition’s filesystem to “Custom” and use the same identifier you used before, in this case 0x53465305. For Amiga use, remember to change max transfer to 0x1fe00
Grab5

6. Save changes and maybe better replug the drive. Quick format the created partition(s).

Drive should be ready to be plugged in on Amiga. There’s no need to have filesystem as visible file anywhere now on, because filesystem has been saved to the drive’s RDB and it’ll work anywhere you plug the drive in.

Remember!:
– Download the 68k version of SFS only. You find it on Aminet and it is for free!

The Smart File System (SFS) is a journaling filesystem used on Amiga computers. It is designed for performance, scalability and integrity. It uses block sizes ranging from 512 (29) to 32768 (215) bytes with a maximum partition size of 128 GB.

Latest SFS versions:
AROS: 1.84
AmigaOS 3: 1.279 -: This is the one you should get!
AmigaOS 4: 1.279
MorphOS: 1.219
Linux: 1.0beta12

Versions for AROS, AmigaOS and MorphOS are based on different branch.
